The Soul Trap line of spells is available to all "full time" spellcasters, i.e. wizards, sorcerors, clerics, druids, and bards, but not paladins or rangers.
If your class is other than Wiz/Sor/Clr/Drd/Brd, check with the DM to see if you have access to the Soul Trap spells (most classes do.)
Necromancy

Components: V, S, F (An empty soul gem)
Range: Close
Target: One creature
Duration: 1 round per level
Save: Will negates
Spell resistance: Yes
You set up up a magical "funnel" to trap a dying creature's soul.
If the affected creature dies while under the effect of the Soul Trap spell, their soul is trapped in the soul gem used as the focus.
A creature of CR 6 or less always fails the Will save.
